AMD Announces $135 Million Investment in Ireland.

AMD has announced its plans to continue its growth in Ireland with an investment of up to $135 million over four years. The investment aims to finance various strategic R&D projects, including up to 290 high-skilled engineering and research positions, as well as a variety of additional support roles.

This development was officially announced by the Minister for Business, Trade, and Employment, Simon Coveney TD, and Ruth Cotter, Senior Vice President of Marketing, Communications, and Human Resources at AMD in Dublin. The new investment is supported by the Irish government through IDA Ireland.

Minister for Enterprise, Trade, and Employment, Simon Coveney TD, expressed the following:

I welcome AMD’s ambitious plans to expand its advanced R&D and engineering activities in Ireland. This significant investment will not only strengthen our thriving technology sector but also create long-term career opportunities for highly skilled professionals and engineering graduates. The company’s plan to create up to 290 new positions and finance strategically important R&D projects demonstrates its confidence in Ireland’s supportive entrepreneurial environment and infrastructure. The Irish government, through IDA Ireland, is pleased to support this expansion that further solidifies our commitment to fostering a vibrant ecosystem for research, development, and engineering.

Ruth Cotter, Senior Vice President of Marketing, Communications, and Human Resources at AMD, contributed to the topic as follows:

AMD’s high-performance and adaptive computing solutions are playing an increasingly significant role in shaping the future of computing, from the cloud and PCs to communication and intelligent edge devices. For nearly three decades, Ireland has been one of Europe’s leading R&D centers, leveraging a strong and highly skilled workforce to develop adaptive computing solutions. By investing further and expanding our presence in Dublin and Cork, we are committed to promoting innovation in Ireland and supporting the European semiconductor ecosystem. Through this investment, our R&D teams in Ireland will design innovative high-performance and adaptive computing engines to accelerate data center, networking, 6G communication, and embedded solutions, while taking a leadership position in artificial intelligence.

Before being acquired by AMD in 2022, Xilinx had established various partnerships with IDA Ireland to advance semiconductor innovation in Ireland. In 2017, Xilinx announced a $40 million investment to expand its research, development, and engineering activities and hire over 100 new qualified employees.

Michael Lohan, CEO of IDA Ireland, made the following statement:

This investment will contribute to Ireland’s position as a global technology leader, pushing the boundaries of what is possible. This expansion further strengthens the company’s presence as a semiconductor innovation hub in Ireland and positions Ireland at the center of AMD’s research and engineering operations in Europe. IDA Ireland is proud to have supported AMD for nearly three decades and previously Xilinx, and remains committed to supporting scaled investments that have a positive impact on Europe’s semiconductor industry.

The Ireland facility was initially established in 1994 as Xilinx‘s first purpose-built facility outside of the United States. It commenced operations a year later, focusing on production, operational support, engineering, and management services. Since the acquisition of Xilinx, Ireland has developed a strong track record of delivering significant commercial successes, such as the AMD Zynq™ UltraScale+™ RFSoC semiconductor product family. It is now home to one of Europe’s largest AMD R&D facilities.
