Following the conclusion of the second European competition, the Regional Major Ranking events in Bucharest were completed, which means we now know all 24 teams that will compete in the PGL Major Antwerp 2022 has to offer in a few weeks.
The preliminaries began two weeks ago with the Americas, when FURIA secured the lone Legends place on offer, followed by Liquid and Complexity as the next two greatest favorites, as well as MIBR, Imperial, and 9z – leaving teams like Evil Geniuses, 00NATION, and paiN without a Major spot. Following that, Asia saw IHC emerge as the unexpected winners, taking the first Contender place on offer, overturning the established quo that had seen Renegades and TYLOO dominate the area for years. In a clash between the two favorites for second place, the Australian team defeated Hansel “BnTeT” Ferdinand and his teammates, knocking them out of contention.
To round out the qualifications, the European “super-region” was split into two groups. BIG and Heroic were unbeaten in the first round, defeating FaZe and Natus Vincere, before the world’s two greatest teams clinched the other two Legends berths. forZe went 3-1 on the way to qualifying as one of the most unexpected names to emerge from the group of death. Outsiders and Vitality, on the other hand, narrowly made it through with a 3-2 record with the Turkish superteam Eternal Fire, another massive underdog entering into the event. The biggest names who did not make it to Antwerp from the challenging first group were MOUZ, OG, and Fnatic.
