PlayStation 5, Sony’s newest console, has been on sale for just over a year, but has managed to surpass Nintendo’s lifetime sales of the Wii U console.
In the company’s latest earnings report, Sony announced that more than 17.3 million PS5s had been sold as of December 31, 2021. The Wii U, on the other hand, had only 13.56 million sales during its lifetime.
The PlayStation 5 had a great financial year, surpassing the PS4 in its first fiscal year, breaking the Nintendo Switch’s record for 33-month US hardware sales, and becoming the fastest-selling console in US history in both unit and dollar sales.
Its sales were able to break these records despite the current chip shortage in the world. Both Sony and Microsoft suffer from the lack of chips that are found in graphics cards, game consoles and more.
Of course, the PS5 still has a long way to go before it enters the list of best-selling consoles of all time. The PS4 has sold 116.9 million units and this number will continue to increase. At the top of the list is PlayStation 2 with 159 million units.
