Sony Interactive Entertainment announced that they have partnered up with Discord. The main purpose of this partnership will be to bring the Discord experience to PlayStation consoles. You can read the full statement here.
For now, we don’t have any concrete information on how this partnership will happen. Sony just said that they are “working hard on an integration between Discord and PlayStation Network”. Two different things can happen here. A full version of the Discord app could be rolled out to PlayStation consoles. Alternatively, a more limited integration between PSN and Discord accounts might happen.
I personally do not think such an announcement has been made for limited integration. Plus, Sony also announced that they have financially invested into Discord. Earlier this year, rumors surfaced that Discord could be purchased by Microsoft for 10 billion dollars. However, after a while this rumor got debunked. In my opinion, it is not a random occurrence, that a partnership between Discord and Sony was announced shortly after this news.
Discord is by far one of the most advanced communication platforms out there. So it will be interesting to see how this partnership will play out. Stay tuned, we will be informing you as soon as we have something concrete.
