Cyberpunk 2077 Update Has Been Delayed

Cyberpunk 2077’s next major update has been postponed to a later date due to a hack developer CD Projekt Red experienced earlier this month. The patch, which will upgrade the game to version 1.2 will come later in March.

Here is the statement made by official Cyberpunk 2077 Twitter account:

The cyber attack has become a major problem for CDPR. The hack made it nearly impossible for some CDPR employees to do their jobs effectively, according to a new report by Bloomberg. This is probably the main reason behind the delay of update 1.2 of Cyberpunk 2077.

Jason Schreier of Bloomberg said the following about the situation:

CD Projekt has said it refused to pay a ransom to the hackers. As a result, employees remain unable to log onto the company’s virtual private network, making it impossible to access the systems and tools needed to do most of their jobs, said the people, requesting anonymity because they weren’t authorized to talk publicly.

Despite the unplanned vacation, the hack has been a nightmare for employees. The invaders had access to their personal information including Polish identification numbers and passport details, leading the company to tell staff to freeze their accounts and report the security breach to the government and their banks, said the people familiar with the matter. Workers were also asked to ship their computers to the company’s IT staff to be scanned for malware or other intrusions, the people said.

The Context Behind the Hack & Cyberpunk Update Delay

Cyberpunk 2077 launched in an extremely bad state. Sony even made a drastic move and removed the game from the PlayStation Store. CD Projekt Red has released numerous updates and fixes to address issues since the game’s release. However, it looks like the 1.2 patch is the most important update yet.

The studio is also continuing to work on free DLCs. We don’t have a specific time frame for their release though. The hackers accessed the source code of some of CD Project Red’s games and internal documentation. This included source codes Cyberpunk 2077 and Witcher 3. They first tried to blackmail CD Project Red. However, CD Project did not cooperate. So, they sold some amount of the stolen data on the black market.

This saga will definitely have future ramifications, so stay tuned for more coverage regarding this subject.
